Bizarre Breeds of Hairless Cats

Sphynx Cat — Sphynx cats came about when a single hairless kitten, who was born in Canada in 1966, was mated with his mother. Today Sphynxes are still rare, although the breed is more genetically sound. Sphynx cats can leave greasy marks if they stay in one place for too long because their skin produces natural oils.

Ukrainian Levkoy Cat — The Ukrainian Levkoy’s profile is angular, and the breed is described as ‘dog-faced’. The smooth-skinned specimen pictured is hairless, but some Levkoys may have patches of hair or be covered in short downy fur. There are still only a few hundred around the world, although the breed is gaining popularity internationally.

Elf Cat — These cats are a new addition to the cat world. These strange looking kitties are the result of a cross between the Sphynx and the American Curl (that’s where they get those amazing ears from). Elf cats are hardier than most pure breeds. The traits they acquired from the American Curls are believed to be free of many of the genetic problems from which other purebred cats suffer.

Peterbald Cat — The Peterbald is another often, but not always, hairless breed of cat. These cats are known for their long, lean bodies, large pointed ears, and big, almond-shaped eyes. And as you can see from this photo, they also have a rather unusual characteristic for cats: webbed feet!

Lil Bub — The Celebrity Kitten with a Positive Message

This is Lil Bub. Found in a tool shed in rural Indiana, Lil Bub was born with a series of genetic anomalies. However this little kitten is healthy and didn’t have to claw her way to fame and stardom as one the cutest kittens on the Internet. And this is no dumb beauty — Lil Bub has a positive message for the world.

Lil Bub has dwarfism. Her limbs are smaller than the rest of her body which prevents her from jumping. She is also completely toothless which causes her tongue to stick out. She also has a genetic anomaly called polydactylism which causes her to have extra toes on all of her paws.

What started as a few photos on the Internet turned into celebrity cat status – Lil Bub has over 200,000 Instagram and Facebook followers, millions of Youtube viewers, her own web TV show with guest celebrities, a book: Lil Bub’s Lil Book, and an award-winning documentary: Lil Bub and Friendz.

More importantly, Lil Bub spreads the message that being different is beautiful. Some of her fans have said that her message has helped them get through difficult times. Sometimes it takes an Internet cat to remind us of what is important in life.

Deucy the Two-Faced Kitten

A rare, two-faced kitten was born in Amity, Oregan, on Tuesday, June 11th. Stephanie Durkee, the owner of both the female kitten and its mother, took the two-faced cat to a vet, who say she’s in good health. She meows loudly from both mouths. The kitten—named “Deucy”—has been rejected by her mother, so she’s been feeding her warmed kitten formula from a syringe.

"The kids … came in and said, ‘Mom there’s a kitty with two heads,’" Durkee told Portland’s NBC affiliate. "And I said, ‘I think you guys are just tired, you’re crazy, that doesn’t happen.’"

Durkee, who plans to keep Deucy, says the kitten was born at “6:11 a.m. on 6/11 under the ‘Gemini’ astrological sign.” Durkee said she “can’t help but wonder at the ‘double’ coincidences surrounding Deucy’s birth.”

Vintage Animal Photographer Harry Whittier Frees

Harry Whittier Frees (1879–1953) was an American photographer who created novelty postcards and children’s books based on his photographs of animals. He dressed the animals and posed them in human situations with props, often with captions. These were famously popular as postcards and posters at the turn of the century. The books and postcards are both highly collectible today.

These comical images are from his 1915 book, The Little Folks of Animal Land. He created images with animals, mostly kittens recreating everyday life scenarios.  The images were titled:

  • “Lily Bufkins Cuts a Wisdom Tooth”
  • "Barker was Busy in the Kitchen"
  • "Mrs. Bufkins Takes Barker’s Place"
  • "Purra Plays a Joke on Prowler"
  • "Mrs. Bufkins had a Busy Day"
  • "Rosie was a patient model"
  • "Prowler and Purra Try the Jam"

Unlike many of Frees contemporaries, he used live animals and not taxidermy. This allows guilt-free enjoyment of the pictures without the “yuck” factor of knowing that you are looking at something dead.
